Overview

A reimagining of Alexander the Great where seven people have secrets and missions.

The Good

  • The Cover
  • The foundation of this story was really strong.  I read a lot of fantasy and it can be repetitive but I felt like Herman had some original ideas.
  • Herman drops little bits of information to keep the reader engaged.  A couple of characters had secrets that were revealed throughout and all the characters had goals and they needed to gather things throughout to complete their mission-this also kept me engaged.

Now for The Bad-This is the spoiler free review.  Scroll down for the spoilers

  • The first half of the book was REALLY GOOD.  It had magic and spells and ambition and love and sex.
    • This story was told from seven, you count ’em, seven different POV’s but it was never confusing and you knew who was talking because it’s told in third person.  Each person was on a mission for love, power, health, or revenge.  Some of the characters didn’t know each other but their paths would eventually cross and that was good.
      • However, midway through, several of these storylines were dropped or quickly and conveniently wrapped up in a neat little bow.
    • The plot of the story abruptly changed.  As I said above, it was about the missions of the main characters and then it became all about a war on magic.  This whole magic-must-be-eradicated story was mentioned one time in the first half, like an afterthought, but it became the whole focus on the second half.  The problem with this was that previous storylines were dropped or quickly wrapped up.  I was invested in everyone’s mission and that part of the story just ended and this stupid, useless war became the focus.
    • Some of the decisions made by several of the characters were horrible.  That’s all I’ll say about that. You can read my rantings in the spoiler section.

Overall

This book had great promise but the dropped storylines and the dumb characters caused the fall of this empire.

Now it’s time for Really? with Bang Bang Books

  • So, you are the prince of an empire but you can’t get your hands on money to go to the mountains to cure your leg? REALLY?  I understand that the finance guy is tough to get around but couldn’t you just sell something or trade a worker’s wages with a nice gold ring you have laying around? I mean your best friend wears more jewelry than the women.
  • So you are the best friend of the prince and his conniving sister start flirting and planting doubt in your head and she does it so obviously that you don’t catch on? REALLY? But you figure out that the beggar she claimed to be in your room to assassinate you wasn’t really the beggar because you don’t remember smelling his body odor? But you can’t see through her weak manipulation? REALLY?
  • So you are trying to get all the ingredients for a spell to give yourself immortality and all you need is the blood of a betrayal and you manipulate the prince’s best friend to get him to kill the prince and when you don’t succeed you use the blood of some random beggar you killed as the final ingredient? And you don’t think it works but then during war it magically works? REALLY? You mean to tell me a that I read about 200 pages of your carefully planned manipulation that you’ve been working on for 9 years only for you to suddenly give up your plan and to just use some random guy’s blood and pray that it works? And then it conveniently works? REALLY?
  • So you have been waiting for 10 years to find out the truth about your mother’s death and you finally get to the castle next to the woman responsible who happens to be the queen and you spend weeks in the castle just questioning people and nothing more? REALLY?
  • So you have been able to communicate with animals from birth and your mom tells you to keep it a secret and magic isn’t uncommon so you think nothing of it and then you find yourself in a cage full of scorpions and to escape you concentrate really hard and you become a scorpion and escape and then your captor tells you that you have powerful magic and that you can turn into animals but you don’t believe her? REALLY?
  • So you are the prince and your mother dotes on you and sure you know she’s a horrible person but dammit, she’s your mom and you love her and then some random girl tells you that by the way she is your twin sister and your mother had her killed at birth for some spell and you just believe her without question? REALLY?
  • So this entire story is about the missions of these seven characters and the eradication of magic by the Aertians ( or whatever) was mentioned one time. Then there is this torch that blows up with signifies that there is magic in Macedonia (or whatever) and the Aertians decide to rage a war killing hundreds of thousands of people? REALLY? It that necessary?

And that has been REALLY with Bang Bang Books.

This was the kind of stuff I’m talking about. Dumb characters and convenient solutions.  It makes me angry when a book is going so well and then drops off midway.  I just feel like the author gave up.
